April 23, 2015 - Please find below the content of a letter that went out to ALL TN LICENSED OD’s last week from the TNBO:
As part of the continuing education requirements to maintain licensure in the state of Tennessee, optometrists shall complete two hours of continuing education in controlled substance prescribing. On Thursday, April 2, 2015, the Tennessee Board of Optometry (“Board”) voted to grant an extension until July 1, 2015 for licensees to obtain two hours of continuing education in controlled substance prescribing.
Presently, the Southern College of Optometry (“SCO”) and the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians (“TAOP”) each offer a two-hour course in controlled substance prescribing. The Board has approved both courses. SCO and TAOP offer their respective courses throughout the state of Tennessee. In the near future, SCO and TAOP anticipate offering the two-hour controlled substance prescribing course in an online format. Requests for information regarding course dates, locations and other specifics should be directed to the organizations offering the course(s).
No other controlled substance prescribing courses have been approved by the Board at this time. The Board will discuss and vote upon additional course providers during future meetings.
