In 2005, SCO alumnus Dr. Jerry Hayes, ’73, and his wife Cris funded the establishment of the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence. With matching funds committed by the SCO Board of Trustees, an endowment was created to support the Hayes Center in its mission to teach independent optometrists the fundamentals of managing the business side of their practice, including strategic planning, budgeting, overhead control and profitability.
Dr. Gerald Eisenstatt, OD, ’84, was named Director of the Hayes Center in September, 2011. A recent graduate of Christian Brothers University’s MBA Program, Dr. Eisenstatt brings years of private practice knowledge and success in overseeing SCO’s practice management curriculum.
He is a member of the Practice Management Educators Association, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry’s (ASCO) Practice Management Educators Special Interest Group, the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians (TAOP), and the West Tennessee Optometric Physicians Society (WTOPS), where he was a past president in the local society.
Program Coordinator Carla O’Brian assists Dr. Eisenstatt with implementing the Hayes Center programs and initiatives. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, O’Brian began her career in higher education at the University of Mississippi and has also worked at Georgia State University. She joined SCO in 2009 as Director of Alumni Programs.
